December 2021-2022
I contributed some animation excerpts to this very unique and special project. Deconstruction is about Joyce Mallonee’s 25 year cancer journey channeled into a multi-media art show and documentary. Alex Mallonee saw an opportunity to creatively honor his mother as well as addressing his own anxieties around healthcare. With her passing, the project has taken on a new dimension, effectively becoming her legacy. Please visit the virtual art show site at: https://deconstructionart.live/

The Operation
Following Alex’s direction, this animation sequence required to be in a line art style, with Joyce on the operating table. A pair of disembodied cartoony gloved hands remove parts from Jocye one by one like in a game of Operation. I had animated this piece frame-by-frame, I had the flexibility to exaggerate the animation and the action. I was referencing the artwork Deconstruction by Joyce Mallonee, Alex Mallonee, Carson Kljavin, for this composition design. My goal was to show the change of her body over time and the perseverance of Joyce’s spirit through her cancer journey though each of the surgeries.

Breast Cancer
This short sequence was designed to illustrate the spread of Breast Cancer to the other parts of the body and it’s severity. The female figure moves in centre frame as a long red ribbon reveals the inner skeleton turning red, to show where the cancer has spread.

Indolent Cancer
This excerpt explains the nature of Indolent Cancer, the goal of this animated sequence was to characterize the indolent cancer cells as cartoony, grumpy, lazy, blobs that grow slowly over time, as they continue to spread through the body. In this sequence I had animated the cells as lazy and small then growing in mass slowly becoming more and more angry.
Coloring Book
In anticipation for the virtual art show I contributed my work to translating each special artwork featured in the show as an illustration for a coloring book incentive gift for the fundraising effort. All works illustrated in the coloring book were credited with the original artist of the piece and were intended to create interest in the event and showcase the beauty of each work.
