Camp Signs

Camp Signs

I designed a series of animal-themed group signs for a Camp Choson a yearly summer camp providing a space that supports and nurtures a connection to Korean heritage and traditional crafts, arts and culture.

My task was to create signage for a cohesive visual system that helps kids easily identify their groups. Each sign features a distinct animal illustrated in a style inspired by traditional Korean folk art, blending cultural aesthetics with playful, approachable modern design.

Concept & Inspiration

The designs draw from minhwa (Korean folk painting), known for its symbolic imagery, flowing lines, and vibrant color palettes. Animals in minhwa often carry meaning and personality, which aligned with how I designed the distinct identities for each group.

Process

All illustrations were created in Adobe Illustrator, allowing for precise vector control and scalability.

1. Sketching & Form Development
In Procreate I began by simplifying each animal into bold, recognizable shapes that would read clearly from a distance.

2. Style Integration
Traditional Korean elements, such as curved lines, ornamental accents, and stylized anatomy, were incorporated into each design.

3. Color System
A vibrant but cohesive palette was developed so each animal felt unique while still belonging to the same visual family.

4. Digital Execution
Final vector illustrations were refined in Adobe Illustrator, ensuring clean lines, consistent stroke work, and scalability for signage production.

Outcome

The completed signs created an intuitive and engaging wayfinding system for the camp kids. The art style of each animal added a memorable and culturally inspired visual identity for each group. The versatile designs could be used for additional camp signage and merch such as T-shirts and posters.
